What your government recommends
Be ready for 3 days or more[1][4][5]
βIn an emergency you may be stuck at home for three days or more. β¦ Water for three days or more. β¦ Food for three days or more. (Auckland Emergency Management; NEMA's Get Ready gives the same 3-day minimum, and its CDEM consistent messages describe a week's supply as ideal.)β
Water: At least 3 litres per person per day[2][1][4]
Food: Food for three days or more. Ideally keep your pantry as full as you can. Choose long-lasting food that doesn't need cooking (unless you have a camping stove or barbecue). Include food for babies and pets. Supplies don't have to be in one place as long as you can find them quickly or in the dark.[1]

Good to know
- β’ New Zealand's guidance is for natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, storms, tsunami, volcanoes); no war-specific household guidance was found.
- β’ The 3 litres per person per day figure is meant to cover drinking and basic hygiene; the advice is to store water for 3 days or more.
- β’ If storing tap water, change it every six months; to disinfect, use plain unscented bleach (not products like Janola with detergents) and let it stand 30 minutes.
- β’ Your regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Group may have local advice.
