Pets in an emergency

What to pack for your pets, where they can go, and how to get them ready for a quick evacuation.

Draft: written from the official sources below, awaiting human review.

If you leave, your pets leave too

Never leave pets behind when you evacuate. Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets, so find a pet-friendly place now: family, friends, pet-friendly hotels, or ask your local animal shelter.

Agree a buddy (a neighbour or friend) who can collect your pets if you cannot get home.

Pack a pet kit

Keep two if you can: a bigger one for staying at home and a light one for evacuating.

  • Food for several days in an airtight, waterproof container
  • Water and a bowl for several days
  • Extra regular medicine
  • A pet first aid kit (ask your vet what to include)
  • Collar with ID tag, harness or lead, and spares
  • Copies of vaccination and registration papers (paper and on your phone)
  • A carrier or crate for each pet
  • Litter and tray, newspaper, bags and cleaning supplies
  • A recent photo of you with your pet, to prove ownership if you get separated
  • A favourite toy, treat or blanket to calm them

Check the kit regularly so food and medicine stay fresh. My plan adds pet food and water to your household list automatically.

Get them ready now

  • Microchip your pet and keep your phone number and address up to date.
  • Leave the carrier out and open with treats and a blanket, so your pet is used to it.
  • Learn where your pets hide, so you can find them fast.
  • At the first warning, bring pets indoors.
